Frequently Asked Questions

I cant decide what design to have quilted, can you help?

Of course! Just note in your request form that you would like help deciding which design to choose, and we can discuss options! Its very helpful to me if you include a photo of the quilt and a general “vibe” you are thinking. I’ll gather a handful (6-7) of designs from my library for you to choose from, and we will go from there.

What is your turnaround time?

Please contact me for an accurate estimate, but generally, I try to schedule a two-week or less turnaround for edge-to-edge quilts. Custom quilting can take up to four weeks, subject to the demands of the scope of the individual project.

Can you handle a King-size quilt?

Yes. My machine is on a 12′ frame and can accommodate most quilts up to 130″ wide.

I also keep a few packages of 80/20 king-size batting on hand, please note in your request form if you need oversized batting.

Batting?

I carry three fiber types of batting, 100% cotton, 80/20 cotton/poly blend, and 100% wool. All three are a mid-loft. Prices are available on the services tab.

What batting is best?

That is up to personal preference, and the purpose of the quilt. Let me know a little bit about the intended purpose of the quilt, and I can give my recommendation.

Can I provide my own batting?

Absolutely! Note that on the request form.

Can you double up on batting?

Of course! We can chat about which combo you would like and the pros and cons of each.

Do I need to use batting?

While I understand that there are some recommendations out there to omit batting in certain quilts, it is my professional opinion that all quilts need to have batting, and I will not quilt a batting-less quilt. If you have concerns over weight, thickness, or warmth, let me know and I can recommend a batting to suit your needs.

Backing?

Do you provide backing?

No, I do not. If you are local to me, I can advise on a couple of shops that tend to carry a good selection of wide backs.

Can I use Minky on the back?

Sure! I’ve done plenty of Minky-backed quilts. I recommend Shannon Cuddle brand minky. It comes in several widths, and MANY colors so it should be easy to find a suitable back. Minky can also be pieced, but make sure you pay attention to the nap of the fibers for best results.

How about other backing substrates?

Contact me with any other substrate questions regarding your intended backing substrate!

Can I have a pieced back?

Yes, of course! I recommend piecing backs with a 1/2″ seam allowance, this keeps your quilt from separating while under tension on the frame.

How about a wildly pieced back?

Sure! I’d love to see it. Make extra sure that your back is still large enough.

Can you center a panel on the back?

I can try. But I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% centered. If you would like a centered back, please make sure your top and bottom borders are VERY generous.

Do I have to trim the threads?

Yes, and no.

Please trim all the threads that poke through to the top of the quilts. These can snag on the quilting foot, tear your top, and potentially damage my machine.

Unless you are making a very high contrast or show quilt, trimming every frayed edge off the backside of your quilt top is unnecessary. Just make sure everything is pressed neatly, and there are no clumps of thread just hanging out.

Can you trim and square my quilt?

Absolutely. Trimming is free of charge, I trim flush to the edge of the quilt top, and all your trimmings are sent back to you.

Would you baste my quilt for me?

Of course. Basting costs $0.01/sq inch, I baste in a 4″ grid, with approximately 1″ stitches.

Can you make me a T-shirt Quilt?

No. I am not in the business of making quilts from start to finish. There are plenty of services out there that will take your shirts and turn them into a quilt.

But I will quilt a t-shirt top you have made! Please remove any buttons/embellishments and note any extra-thick embroidery on the request form.

What if my quilt is wonky/misshapen/bubbly

No quilt is perfect, ever. I promise. I have a few tricks up my sleeves to help ease in any fullness and wonk. If you are concerned, bring it up in your request form, or at dropoff, and we can evaluate.

Anything requiring repair or excessive attention (excessive consists of anything over an hour’s worth of extra work) will be billed at a $25/hour rate. Excess work needs will be communicated before any work is done, with the option of returning the quilt to you to complete the work yourself.

Intentionally not-square quilts

I’d love to quilt them! I would, however, have to take them on a case-by-case basis, and they would likely fall under a custom quilt category. But feel free to reach out with one!

Do you also bind quilts?

Unfortunately, no, not at this time.

I’m a new quilter, and nervous. Advice?

Welcome! I’m super glad to hear from you. Beginner quilts are my FAVORITE to quilt, there’s something special about a first quilt, and having it professionally quilted can help your confidence grow as a quilter. I promise I won’t judge any workmanship funkiness, because believe me, even my first few quilts were very much not perfect! Watching my newbie clients grow and evolve their skills is a complete thrill.

If you’d like to chat about specific quilt-making things as you make your first couple of quilts, (or even if you are a seasoned quilter!) feel free to reach out, I love to answer questions about quilt-making!
